Introduction

In this class we will consider the question of BDSM within different theoretical conceptions and therapeutic approaches. We will take a look at the psychoanalytic and postpsychoanalytic conceptualisation of sadism and masochism relying on the works of Freud, Lacan and Deleuze. We will also make an attempt to place BDSM in a frame of attachment theory and modern social cognitive neuroscience, therefore, consider BDSM as a phenomenon not narrowed down to the sphere of sexuality. Finally, we will consider BDSM as a part of existential therapy and its practical therapeutic applications.
The course will end with a guest lecture of renowned scholar Prof. Kevin Boileau
